  1. Your problem must be written in question form
  2. The problem must be one that reflects your available resources
  3. The problem must be interesting to you
  4. The problem must include a manipulated and a responding variable
  5. The problem must be safe to investigate
  6. The problem should not be one whose answer can be found in any reference material
